Exploring Life: Preparing for a World of Science and Service
The Biology (B.A.) major at Spring Arbor University helps students appreciate the complexity and beauty of life while celebrating God’s creativity in the natural world. Students explore cellular, molecular, and environmental biology, while building a strong foundation in scientific inquiry and laboratory techniques. Our program approaches science with a Biblical worldview, with professors committed to guiding both academic growth and spiritual development. Students gain a broad understanding of biological principles through a Christ-centered perspective on creation and stewardship. Working toward a Biology (B.A.) degree gives students flexibility to double major, combining biology studies with complementary fields such as ministry, business, or communication. Graduates are prepared for science-adjacent careers, including science communication, policy, ministry, management, and nonprofit work.
Key Courses
Biology (B.A.) students will explore a wide range of biological concepts through hands-on laboratory work and field experiences. They develop analytical and reasoning skills, and cultivate an appreciation for life at all biological levels. This foundation empowers students to apply their knowledge in leadership, service, and outreach roles, making a meaningful impact in their communities and beyond.
Certifying to Teach
- If you are hoping to become certified to teach, the biology major and minor is available only for secondary certification. Our biology faculty are as concerned with non-academic qualities as about biology concepts. With this concern, the faculty will be monitoring and reporting on character, attitude, and behavioral qualities during a student's education at Spring Arbor University. This information will have a direct impact on recommendation of a student for admission to the teacher education program and for admission to student teaching.
- All biology education students are required to pass the State of Michigan Subject
Area Test in Biology prior to being certified. In order to help Spring Arbor University
students pass this requirement, the following requirement is added to the course requirements:
- Every Spring Arbor University biology major or minor will be required to pass the Spring Arbor University biology comprehensive test prior to departmental approval for student teaching. Biology majors and minors certifying to teach at the secondary level should pass the departmental examination prior to taking the Michigan State Teacher Test in Biology.
- The Spring Arbor University biology test may be taken at any time with one week notice to the biology department secretary. Results will be returned to the student within one week of taking the test. The Spring Arbor University biology test may be taken as many times as needed to pass.
What our students say about the Biology program
“I grew up in an area with a gorgeous environment and wanted a program that would encourage my study of God’s creation. The Biology major provides a lot of hands-on experience and extensive knowledge, which is a testament to how much they genuinely care about the content. Professors and advisors in this program also put a lot of effort in personalizing the content to the specific career path you want.”
