Biography

Born and raised in Jackson, Michigan I have lived here most of my life.  For a brief time, I lived in Wisconsin where I formally began my teaching career and attained my advanced degree in Educational Leadership.  My interest in teaching began as a kindergarten student, where I felt a calling to serve in the education profession.  That interest strengthened with time, with an initial interest in serving our profession as a math teacher.  A high school teacher of mine saw a gift in me to help those students for whom school was a greater challenge and encouraged me to pursue special education.

As a beginning teacher I taught special education, with a focus on those with emotional impairments.  Upon returning to Michigan, I served as a Teacher Consultant and then as a high school administrator.  The seven years as a Teacher Consultant afforded me to work with elementary, middle, and high school students.  I then served as a high school administrator, with my final eleven years (2008-2019) as Principal for Instruction.  All my experience upon my return to Michigan was with Jackson Public Schools, and Jackson High School.

Upon concluding my career with Jackson Public Schools, I began work with Spring Arbor University in 2019. As a Christian University, it was a natural fit for my desire to serve and continue to contribute to the education profession.  I began with the School of Education full-time in 2021, and currently serve as the Dean for the School of Education, and Director for Special Education.  Spring Arbor University continues to provide a wonderful opportunity to work with the next generation of teacher leaders.  In addition to working for Spring Arbor University, I am very involved with my church (teaching faith formation, singing in the church choir, and participation with Women’s Guild), and with the Jackson Kiwanis Club (President for 2024-25).  I have been married to John for nearly 40 years and have two adult children who live out-of-state.  Our daughter is a classroom teacher, and our son works in the culinary profession.

Education

Bachelor of Science in Special Education from Eastern Michigan University

Master of Science in Educational Leadership from University of Wisconsin

Why SAU

My decision to become a part of Spring Arbor University was predicated on it being a Christian University, and the established reputation of the School of Education. Teaching is a profession that is mission driven, and being a part of the Spring Arbor University community allows for continuation of that mission.  I believe God has placed me here intentionally, to continue to share the gifts He has blessed me with.  Further, I believe that working with the next generation of teacher leaders here at Spring Arbor University affords the opportunity to walk this journey with young Christians who desire to serve in the education profession
