In my life experience, Lent has never consciously had a paramount influence; however, I still have found myself interacting with it. I remember the first time I saw someone practicing Ash Wednesday and it happened to be my doctor! She laughed and said, “Aren’t you going to ask why I have dirt on my face?” and I responded, “Well, it looks intentional,” (I had no idea why she had ash on her forehead and honestly not wanting to embarrass her). Isn’t that what Lent is about—intentionality? Making a conscious sacrifice to cultivate closeness with the Father? She made an impression and that moment has always left me wondering about what it means to live for God; what it means for the individual who’s living.
