Spring Arbor University, in partnership with Spring Arbor Township, Summit Water, and Congressman Tim Walberg (MI-05), are honored to announce a forthcoming $750,000 grant for local water infrastructure from Community Project Funding authorized by H.R. 6938, the Commerce, Justice, Science; Energy and Water Development; and Interior and Environment Appropriations Act, 2026 which was passed by the U.S. Congress and signed into law on January 23, 2026.  The grant will help fund a water infrastructure project that will involve drilling 2 new wells in Spring Arbor and constructing a new wellhouse, water main, and booster station. These system updates will improve safe water supply and ensure adequate water pressure for the entire Spring Arbor community, which includes local homes, businesses, senior care facilities, and staff and students at Western Schools and Spring Arbor University (SAU).

This funding was made possible through the kind endorsement of Representative Walberg, who recommended the Spring Arbor project to the Appropriations Committee in the U.S. House of Representatives for the federal government’s fiscal year 2026.  The project has a Federal nexus because it is for purposes authorized by Section 1452 of the Safe Drinking Water Act, 42 U.S.C. 300j- 12.

“I was proud to vote in support of and see President Trump sign into law legislation which will provide funding for numerous community projects within Michigan’s 5th Congressional District,” said Rep. Walberg. “Over the past year, I have been working with community leaders to identify and secure federal funding for needs across the district. As a result of our collective efforts, I am pleased to announce that under this legislation, Spring Arbor University, Spring Arbor Township, and Summit Water will benefit from funding that makes critical improvements to their water infrastructure and will ensure that residents, schools, and businesses have access to a clean and reliable water supply.”

Since there are no wells in Spring Arbor currently, the township receives all of its drinking water from Summit Water, which is based in Summit Township.  Adding local water sources in Spring Arbor will enhance the community’s ability to withstand emergencies and avoid low pressure, which could result in backflow and contamination.  Spring Arbor University is committed to partnering with the township to protect local residents, students, and businesses.

Dr. Brent Ellis, SAU President, commented, “Spring Arbor University has been part of this community for over 150 years, and we take seriously our responsibility to be a good neighbor. Safe, reliable water infrastructure isn't just a campus concern – it's a community concern. We're grateful to Congressman Walberg for championing this project and proud to partner with Spring Arbor Township and Summit Water to strengthen the resources that serve every resident, student, and family in our community.”

Spring Arbor Township Supervisor David Herlein said, “Spring Arbor Township is pleased to partner with Spring Arbor University and Summit Water on this Community Project Funding grant. This money will support long-term enhancement of our water infrastructure, which benefits the entire community. We’re particularly grateful to Spring Arbor University for taking the lead on writing this grant proposal.”

These water infrastructure improvements will fortify Spring Arbor’s resources for decades to come.
