The Impact of the Office of Intercultural Relations on My College Experience

One of the most exciting parts of the college experience is the new environment, although that excitement translates to anticipation or a little fear. This academic endeavor put about 6,000 miles between me and my home in Nigeria—a reality I can face thanks to the immense support from loved ones and programs on campus that continue to be very pivotal to my academic journey at Spring Arbor University.
First Impressions
After settling into my first dorm room in Lowell Hall, my freshman self was hit with the realization that a new phase of my life had begun. This raised the question of how exactly I was going to learn to socialize and find a community in a new place by myself. This concern was eased by a knock on the door and a friendly face. I quickly discovered she was my Link Mentor, Jessie Galloway. She came in with a Spring Arbor University mug, coffee, and a couple of tips to keep the biting cold of Michigan winters from seeping through the windows.
This would be the first of many encouraging experiences with the Office of Intercultural Relations (OIR).
What is OIR?
The Office of Intercultural Relations is a part of the Student Government Association dedicated to fostering understanding and holistic development across the diverse backgrounds and perspectives that exist within the SAU community while representing the depth and breadth of God’s kingdom. This includes programs like the Link program, where incoming freshmen who are first-generation, students of color, and international students are supported by current student-mentors in settling into life at SAU.
OIR curates events to provide platforms for various cultures to be recognized and learned. My favorite of these events is the International Thanksgiving, where various cultures are shared through food, music, and prayers in different languages. My other favourite is the OIR Study nights, where we gather to work on our academic goals together. Both are awesome ways to connect and learn about cultures.
Giving back
Part of my involvement with OIR has been the opportunity to give back as a student leader. In the past academic year, I have been able to serve with an amazing team of Intercultural Advisors and Link Mentors. We all work together to carry out the objectives of this office and help other students who are in the same position I once was.
With the guidance of the Chief Diversity Officer and Coordinator of Intercultural Relations, the OIR makes it possible to pass the encouragement forward through leadership roles to invest in other students.
Beyond SAU to the Contemporary World
I can wholeheartedly say that the Office of Intercultural Relations has provided a platform for cultural exchange through discussions, events, and excursions. This has equipped me with the tools to have respectful curiosity about the world around me. In addition to this, the OIR has gifted me with friendships that I will treasure beyond college.
Moving to a new town, state or even country can be daunting at first, but knowing that you are in the care of an organization (like OIR at Spring Arbor University) that is dedicated to creating a welcoming and supportive space makes it all worth it. I'm so thankful for the impact OIR has had on my college experience.
