Transferring schools can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be! It can be complicated and a lot of work but I am here to tell you that the process can be smooth and even exciting. I transferred to Spring Arbor University in the fall of 2024 and I am so happy I did! While there are many moving parts to consider, staying organized and proactive can make all the difference.  So for whatever reason you are transferring, I listed three helpful tips today that will make your journey to a new school easy!

Stay in Contact with Your Advisor

Your advisor is your go-to person throughout the transfer process, so don’t be afraid to reach out! No question is too small or too big—they’re there to help you navigate everything. When it comes to transferring, credits are crucial so don’t neglect checking in with your advisor in case adjustments need to be made. Don’t forget to ask your transferring advisor about the general education requirements and prerequisites for your intended major, I guarantee you they will provide useful insights. They will also ensure that you are taking the right courses that will count towards your degree and confirm credit transferring policies so that you can avoid retaking courses. Staying in touch with your advisor will give you peace of mind while you finish at your current school!

Look for Transfer Scholarships

Money can be a big stressor when transferring, but don’t worry—there are plenty of scholarships and grants out there to help! It is never too early to start looking! Most of the time, the institution you are transferring from offers scholarships to students looking toward their next academic steps. Ask around and do your research! Don’t forget to complete the FASFA and put the colleges you are thinking about transferring to on your form. Doing this opens the door to federal aid and potential school-specific scholarships. There are many places that would love to give financial aid to students who are considering more education, so research transfer scholarships and look locally! Scholarships are out there, and with some effort, you can find opportunities that make your transition more affordable.

Get Involved Early

Get involved in campus life early on by following the universities or colleges’ social media platforms and visiting campus if able! It is never too early to make friends and learn more about campus. Making connections before you arrive can help you feel more at home from day one and prepare you for the social side of college life! I recommend you look for clubs, organizations, and student groups that align with your interests and engage with faculty and advisors to build relationships early. When I transferred, getting plugged into campus life early made all the difference and this helped me feel more comfortable in the transfer process!

Conclusion

Transferring to a new school is a big step, but it’s also an incredible opportunity. Remember, you are far from alone in this process and the admissions team at SAU is more than welcome to answer any questions. Before you know it, you’ll be thriving at your new school!
