All patient information, including all visit information is kept 100% confidential without explicit written authorization. The only exception is when there is known and plausible cause of a patient’s endangerment to self or others. Our Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) policy is available at the HHWS front desk.

HHWS provides a limited supply of prescription and over the counter (OTC) medications to students at cost. HHWS contracts with a pharmaceutical company that provides these medications.

Weatherwax Pharmacy is located 0.5 miles from campus and prescription medication is e-prescribed to the pharmacy the student prefers.

HHWS staff draw labs as ordered by the nurse practitioner, medical director or the student’s primary care provider. HHWS faxes results to the ordering physician, or results can be electronically sent to the ordering physician. HHWS has a courier service to pick up labs.

Henry Ford Allegiance Health Diagnostic Center – Spring Arbor (HFAH) is a satellite diagnostic center for imaging and labs located 0.5 miles away from campus. Students take their radiology (x-ray) and lab requisitions (for labs that HHWS does not draw) from HHWS to this facility, or visit the HFAH main hospital outpatient lab or imaging 24/7 for lab or radiology services.

HHWS refers students to qualified specialists in Jackson, Chelsea, Ann Arbor or in their home communities. HHWS refers to SAU Physical Therapy.

HHWS bills health insurance companies for services. Students are encouraged to find out how their insurance company covers away-from-home healthcare expenses.

To file a health insurance claim, we require a copy of the front and back of the insurance card and the name and date of birth of the subscriber. HHWS is contracted with most commercial insurance companies and will bill them directly. Co-pays will not be required of students at time of service; however, co-pays will be included in balance billing after insurance reimbursement.

A reduced "cash pay" pricing at the time of visit is an option offered to accommodate those who prefer.

Students and their responsible parties may pay their co-pays or balances online.

HHWS works with the Cross Cultural Studies Program to provide travel information, medications and immunizations.

Counseling Services

At times, university life can be difficult and stressful. Students may feel unsure about themselves, their ability to relate to others, their capabilities and their future plans. They may feel that things just aren’t coming together as planned. Often, students need someone who will listen to them and help them sort things through. The counseling services at Holton Health and Wellness Services (HHWS) facilitate a safe environment in which students can share their concerns with a professional counselor as they develop strategies to successfully navigate their lives.

The Director of Counseling Services, Carrie Dashner, is located in HHWS, in the lower level of the Student Life Center. Counseling services are free to every student.

To schedule an appointment, email [email protected] and include a schedule of available days and times you are able to meet.

Counseling sessions are scheduled by appointment between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
