Biography
My name is Maxwell Patchet, and I am an English Professor here at Spring Arbor University, and I live in Summit Township with my wife and two kids. I began working at Spring Arbor in the Fall of 2023. Before starting here, I was at Sterling College for three years where I served as a professor and department chair in the Language and Literature Department.
At SAU, I teach courses in British Literature, Science Fiction, and Literary Criticism. My research interests are the intersection of philosophy and literature, critiques of empire, and the work of G. K. Chesterton. Most recently, I had an article published in The Chesterton Review on the importance of perspective to Chesterton’s work.
Beyond my teaching, I enjoy disc golf, fantasy football, and video games. Each of my hobbies provides me with an enjoyable challenge and a way to keep in touch with friends. As a literature scholar, I also appreciate the way that the medium of video games allows for a unique experience of narrative.
Education
Ph.D. in English from Marquette University

Why SAU
I believe that Spring Arbor University's commitment to Jesus Christ as the perspective for learning is essential to a robust understanding of the liberal arts. What we study in the liberal arts are the products of mankind's attempts to reckon with the consequences of the fall, and as a result ultimately point to Jesus Christ and his death and resurrection. At Spring Arbor University, we approach our various disciplines with this in mind. We seek both expertise within our subject matter and a larger perspective to see what our subject of study says about who God is.
