What is your official title?
My official title is "Assistant Professor of Music - Director of Choir & Voice."
What is a fun fact about yourself?
A fun fact about me is that I love backpacking in Northern Michigan! Finding secluded places to camp that you can only get to by hiking is my favorite summer activity that combines being active and with the peace and quiet of Pure Michigan.
What do you love most about working at SAU?
I have two favorite parts about working at SAU. The first is having the opportunity to cultivate events that bring music, art, and Jesus to my community - whether that be on campus or in the surrounding areas. Getting to collaborate with others on campus or at the Arbor Church has led to some really wonderful performances so far.
The second has been getting to know so many students across campus. As the choir director, I get the privilege of working with students from all majors, and I love getting to learn about their different passions.
Hanging of the Greens is coming up soon! For those who haven't experienced it before, how would you describe this event?
Hanging of the Greens is the most fun and exciting Christmas Party you could attend! The evening starts off with a fantastic Band and Choir concert at the Arbor Church, which tells the Christmas Story through music and scripture readings. It's always packed, so arrive early to get a good seat! Our concert ends with a candle lighting in the plaza and fireworks to follow. After that, enjoy horse-drawn carriage rides, cookies & cocoa in the dining commons with the Jazz Band, Santa Claus in the student center, and so much more! It's a great way to kick off the season.
What makes Hanging of the Greens meaningful for you and the Spring Arbor Community as a whole?
I think the reason Hanging of the Greens is so meaningful to me, and others in the community, is that we get the chance to truly celebrate the birth of Christ in such a large way! I believe God designed His people with a capacity for great joy! When there are hundreds of people, all gathered together in one place, worshipping and enjoying all the beautiful things the Christmas season has to offer, you can't help but feel joy! It's an amazing time to come together and experience the Light of the World, during the darkest time of the year, and just celebrate!
