Echoing the words of Luke 9:23, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me,” John Piper says, “Lent or no Lent, not doing some things you feel like doing is the daily pattern for the disciples of Jesus. Yes, daily.”

Perhaps the Lenten season is not meant to stop in 40 days. Many might feel a sense of relief that their fasts are over, and they can return to “ordinary life.” Perhaps the Lenten season is meant to cultivate in us a discipline and a self-control in our daily lives. The good news is fasting, prayer, scripture reading, and fellowship are for “ordinary life” as much as they are for special occasions.

The season of Lent reminds me that closeness with Jesus, intention in my relationship with Him, is available to me always. God’s continual grace is available to me every day of the year, in the same measure and that is worth celebrating.
