Spring Arbor University has found the next leader of its men’s basketball team, announcing the hiring of Mark DeLaney as the Cougars’ new head coach.

DeLaney arrives at SAU with nearly two decades of coaching experience spanning NCAA Division II, NAIA and high school basketball, bringing a strong reputation for player development, recruiting success and Christ-centered leadership.

President Brent Ellis framed the hire as an expression of the university’s foundational commitments. “At Spring Arbor, we are unapologetic about our commitment to Jesus Christ, while also serious about competing for championships. Mark DeLaney has spent his coaching career proving that the two belong together, and his arrival signals exactly what we expect of Cougar Athletics in this next chapter. I am grateful to Ryan Marken and the search committee for their faithful work, and I welcome Mark and his family with great anticipation for what God will do through this program.”

“We are elated to welcome Mark and his family to the Cougar community,” said Interim Athletic Director Ryan Marken. “A dedicated student of the game, Mark has studied under some of the most respected minds in the sport, and we are excited to bring his expertise and experience to our program. More importantly, beyond his professional accomplishments, Mark’s deep love for Jesus, his family, and the discipleship of the young men in his program is truly inspiring. We are honored to have him join our community.”

DeLaney recently served as an assistant coach at Ashland University, where he helped lead the Eagles to a 20-11 record and an NCAA Division II Tournament appearance during the 2025-26 season. He has previously served on coaching staffs at Grace College, Northern State University, and Cedarville University. DeLaney also owns a decade of high school coaching experience.

“I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to serve as the head men’s basketball coach at Spring Arbor University,” said DeLaney. “What makes this opportunity so special is being part of a Christ-centered community that is unapologetic about its faith in Jesus and committed to using athletics as a platform to impact lives for His glory. Our mission is to develop young men spiritually, academically and athletically.”
